I absolutely loved this one. I had heard it was creepy, but I really enjoyed how it wasn’t horror creepy. Alex North wrote an incredible crime fiction novel, with insanely haunting undertones. I don't read adult fiction much because I never can follow the storyline but I gave this a try since thrillers are right up my alley. I was very pleased with this book and the way that events slowly unfold through the whole story. I liked seeing this story told in different perspectives and all the twists and turns that the story took you through. Tom is used to Jake and his imaginary friend, although he was hoping it would stop after they moved. Now in a town known for the crimes of the Whisper Man and talk of a possible accomplice, should Tom be concerned when Jake says he hears whispers in the night?
Have you ever read the same book as someone, but you both experienced completely different stories? I feel that's how this book was, reading from different perspectives; same book, different stories. Sure, The Whisper Man is about a handful of murders that happened 20 years prior, the recent disappearance of a little boy, and the search for a possible accomplice to the Whisper Man. This story is so much more than that! It's about the relationship between father and son, importance of communication, making amends, and second chances.
I wanted to love this book but my feelings throughout the whole thing were very up and down. Some parts I really enjoyed, some I didn't. Before reading this book I read into all the hype about how scary it was. I felt a tad bit disappointed; it wasn't as scary as most people claimed. To each their own. I enjoyed the creepiness of it, but after hitting the creep peak too soon, the book kind of fizzled for me. I want to compare it to a really long episode of Criminal Minds (one of my favorite shows) with serial killers, detectives, copy-cats, profilers and a ghost of a little girl only Jake can see. This book definitely kept my interest, but it took me a lot longer to read this than expected. I thought The Whisper Man was a little predictable. It was good, but not a real favorite.
