Ok, I'm updating this to 4 stars because it's been three days and I cannot stop thinking about these characters.

Normal People has brilliant moments when it manages to be simple and yet incredibly complex. Through very few words it has a gift of making you feel a deep connection to the characters and their struggles.

Oh my gosh this was such a good one. They’re making a Hulu series out of it, so I’m not alone in this. Set in western Ireland, a tight, well written story of a couple as they grow up from high school through college. Clever writing technique keeps it easy and quick to read, and the characters are so well developed and relatable you’ll zip through it in a couple days.
Finished this after being recommended and honestly I just didn’t connect with the characters or the story. It’s easy to see why it was turned into the series and people loved it from that due to the physical, emotional abuse and suicide references etc. It’s clear to see why everyone is so intrigued with the story but for me I found it difficult to connect and I felt the book never really reached a peak moment.
First of all, I really struggled with the lack of speech marks (is this the same in Sallys other book??) but i am glad I persevered. I did really enjoy this book! It was refreshing to read such a raw and honest romance, stripped of all the lovey dovey down to the bare bones of an insatiable attraction between 2 characters, that really knows no bounds. I felt connected to Connell over his struggles fitting in at University but sometimes was too frustrated with the characters and their decisions t

I suppose I can see the appeal of this book and the hype. There’s something there but overall this was just not at all satisfying and quite a bit frustrating to read. The characters are heartbreaking, the relationship is probably realistic but mostly infuriating in the pathetic communication between the two. The ending is probably genius to some but I really hated it. Not to mention it reads like a rough draft and not a finished, edited, published novel.
