I actually really enjoyed this! I can see why it's not for others, but I felt really invested in Connell and Marianne and their lives/relationships. I could relate to them when they were learning who they are and struggling to deal with mental health or feeling like an outsider. The writing was very beautiful and elegant, although it took me a while to get used to the author's method of not using speech bubbles. It's a very simple Irish book about Irish teens growing up.

Read my full review on my blog, ReadingMaria.
This is a book that is relatively short, but it’s packed with so much that you really can’t be distracted when reading it (don’t try it during an NBA Finals game, is all I’m saying! Definitely need total silence to read this one). The journey that Marianne and Connell go through is interesting, and to see them grow up around each other and still find their ways back to each other is sweet. But don’t be fooled, because there’s a lot more going on here ...more

Loved this book. Wasn’t sure what to think at first but the lack of punctuation seemed to get me more into the character’s stories.
This is an incredibly relatable book about a relationship between a young man and woman and the struggles with communication and other problems that come up.
So many times during this book I was thinking about similar situations I’ve had with my relationships. I didn’t want it to end. Really enjoyed the writing.

I really enjoyed this book about two teenagers from different backgrounds discovering themselves as they move from adolescence to young adulthood. The writing was straight forward and clear amidst all the struggle, challenges, and insight shared throughout. I was often frustrated with their lack of communication with each other and decision-making, but aren't we often when we are the "flies on the wall" to other peoples' lives and relationships? Everything is always 20/20 when viewed objectively

You’ll either feel a relatable anxious connection to these perfectly flawed characters or you won’t and you’ll launch the book across the room and curse them in irritation. I loved Normal People in a miserable way, Marianne and Connell’s vulnerabilities and angst made me hold them tight and love them more. Rooney addresses the nuances of class, depths of mental health, familial complexities, and domestic abuse. The characters are magnetically drawn to each other, theirs is a dysfunctional relati

I had heard such mixed reviews in this book that I was anxious to discover it for myself. I am kind of I. The middle of the road on this one. The main characters were interesting, I enjoyed following them through the years, but they frustrated me a bit as well. I liked the book, but it didn’t touch my own emotions in any way but the frustration. I can easily see why some people loved it and why some hated it.
