While I'm not certain I would be entirely comfortable with a very young child reading this story, as it has some rather scary elements, it's certainly an interesting story and a cute fantasy. It is not that interesting to adults unless you want to read it before seeing the movie or if you want to read it as a companion to your child. So I finally readCoralineand I must say that this was the book I was searching for so desperately in grade four but never found. Specifically, I was looking for some really good scary story that would scare the crap out of me and I never found it. Fast forward however many years and here it is. I just had to wait for someone to write it. Definitely will follow up with The Graveyard Book.

I think this author has great ideas and his books are probably great for children but I just dont get that invested. As with Stardust, I liked the movie better, and that is always a great insult to a book. I think that the movie developed further the aesthetic and the vision of the book and did it better. The ideas are great and I had never read a terror book for children which I aprove. I will have to think if I read another Gaiman book.

I was not surprised to read, in the author’s notes, that Gaiman was a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia as a child. This fantasy adventure for children felt like a Narnia knock-off stripped of the religious symbolism. I suspect that I might have enjoyed the story as a 9 year old, but as an adult it did nothing for me.
