Another satisfyingly sweet read by Allen, but not too saccharine. How can I resist a character that keeps a secret cache of candy and romance novels and another character has books that magically appear in her presence? I like the touches of magical realism, where water boils and eggs fry in the company of a couple in love. The story was a wonderful contrast between innocence and understanding. I wanted to let out a satiated sigh when I finished The Sugar Queen; it was lipsmacking good.
Meet Josey, Della Lee and Chloe, three very different women brought together by a twist fo fate. Josey is wealthy, plump, unhappy and given to eating sweets that she hides in her closet. She lives with her mother, stuck in a dull, adventureless life with a bleak social future. That all changes one evening when she finds her closet harboring Della Lee Baker, a local waitress who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother. With Della Lee’s "guidance", Josey’s narrow existence quickly expand

I'm not typically a fan of 'magic' in stories - most magical realism type books are NOT a good fit for me. So, I was a bit anxious about reading this one as it has a magical quality. And, boy, was I surprised! I was VERY taken with this book. It was such a nice, entertaining book! I really loved the characters ... Josey resonated with me for a number of reasons and I loved her adoration of sweets/candy while Chloe & her books were fascinating to me! I love the idea of books you need finding you!

The Sugar Queen is a sweet, romatic novel that reads likes a fairy tale. Josey is a 27 year old woman who lives with her aging mother and is destined to be her caretaker. Josey on the other hand more than anything wants to leave her hometown and travel and fall in love. With a little magic and some luck things start to change for Jsoey.
I liked the magical flare and I would recommend this book to everyone who believes in happy endings. Great book for the holidays!

Not as magical and fun as Garden Spells, The Sugar Queen still tells a good interlocking stories of an overbearing mother, a delicious mail carrier, a gorgeous man who appears to have been drawn with charcoal, a cheating boyfriend, a woman hanging out in a closet, two gals with trendy names, and box upon box of Swiss Cake Rolls mixed with other assorted sweets. Some people will really enjoy the twist ending; others like me (patting myself on the back here) will figure it out long before turning

Really enjoyed this book...took me awhile to read it due to the simple fact that I have had no time to read! But one sick day home with my little guy and I whipped through it! Maybe categorize it as a grown up fairy-tale??? Not sure. Loved the little sprinklings of magic and the conclusion! I am excited to pick up another Sarah Addison Allen book!
I’ve read two other books by this author, Garden Spells and Other Birds. Both of those books were 5-star reads for me. This one was not as good, in my opinion. It wasn’t bad, just a little too quirky. I love a little magical realism, but I think this story was a little too fanciful. I loved the main characters and was genuinely rooting for them. The ending was satisfying and left me with a smile on my face.
