I picked this one up on a whim when my Nook was charging and I wanted something to read. I had heard a lot of good things about it and was intrigued at what all the fuss was about. Well, now I know. Kate Morton knows how to tell a great story, how to unfold a story in a way that keeps you racing through the book and how to keep you guessing! I really enjoyed every moment of reading this novel.

This is exactly the kind of big, juicy and delicious mystery that I can fall into. Rather than being a typical whodunnit, this novel focuses on unraveling the threads of history and discovering the love, hope, loneliness and horrors that are contained therein.
Told in three equally compelling timelines with three wonderful protagonists, this book is a page turner and a real gem.

One of the best books I've read. The author goes back and forth between characters and periods of time. I thought I knew where the book was going and how it was ending, but it was even better than I imagined; and surprisingly wonderful.

I was initially drawn to the book because of the interest in why a four year old child was found aboard a ship bound for Australia. I wasn't off put by thr jumping backwards and forwards in time of the narrative; it rather added to the sense of a multi generational story that was being resolved. However, the plot twists became increasingly obvious and you knew what was going to happen before they did. It was a disappointment. A novel which had the potential to be great was mediocre at best.
