I know the author is Catalan so I was pretty excited when I picked this book up and I was ready to give it five stars from the get-go but *sigh* not happening.
I’ll review it properly later but: The story was sort of fun to read, I wasn’t particularly hooked but the paranormal mystery and all the puzzles kept me going. So about 3 years ago, I woke up at 2am, completely sweaty, remembering the most terrible nightmare. I decided to grab my phone and record a narration of the dream so that I wouldn't forget it in the morning. It turned out very much like audio from The Blair Witch Project....I mean, come on, my FACE MELTED OFF....

I cannot say enough good things about this book! It tells the story of A., who inherits a mansion from his American cousin and decides to take up residence there with his friend in order to solve the mystery of his cousins mysterious suicide. The story is told through varied media forms - letters, transcripts, closed circuit cameras, etc. The story twists and turns as clues are discovered that lead to the grand finale. Wow! Different. Not your parents' gothic mystery, this. Funky, dark, original, punk, stylish - puzzles, anagrams, strange dreams, a secret society, recorders, ghosts - what's not to love with this one. I couldn't begin to pin down a style of writing here, but it is very original and very entertaining. A solid 4 stars.
