What a wonderful book. I liked it even more than Plainsong; possibly because I enjoyed following-up on some of the characters. The McPheron brothers just grabbed at my heart. These two old men were so endearing.
The introduction of new families and characters in Eventide showed us the good, the bad and the ugly. Haruf's strong characterizations and depiction of family drama is very realistic. Despite tragedy and personal traumas a feeling of hope and romance pervaded the story.

I loved Plainsong, the first book by Haruf that features some of the same characters as this follow-up, and I so wanted to love this one just as much. (But, I didn't.)
Haruf is an incredibly talented writer who gives us an amazing character study set in the American west - the McPheron brothers are two of my favorite characters I have met in the past couple of years.
