I knew I was going to love this book the moment I read the opening line:
Mark Watney is left for dead on Mars by his crew after a freak accident. He chronicles his fight for survival in his daily mission log. It was hard not to be drawn to this character. I loved his ingenuity, his geekiness, and especially his wit. Spectacular book!!!

"I'm pretty much fucked.
That's my considered opinion.
Fucked."

"Duct take is magic and should be worshipped."
So goes one of my favorite lines from this tribute to human ingenuity and scientific endeavor. If there's one thing I love, it's watching an endearing character be especially clever, and Mark Watney is one of the cleverest and most endearing characters I've come across in some time. And the "hard sci-fi" element only adds to the narrative, as so many standard sci-fi books would just wave their hands at all the dilemmas and make it go away with so ...more

I heard so much positive buzz about this one so I couldn't wait to get started on it. And I really did like it but I didn't love it nearly as much as so many others have. The science was obviously spot on and the story was very suspenseful and I could not wait to find out what would happen. I loved the main character's narrative voice and cared enough about finding out his fate to read extremely long sequences of scientific stuff that only sometimes made sense to me. I'm not scientifically incli

Loved this! I avoided it despite a lot of recommendations for quite awhile. Space travel / sci-fi is really not my thing but this is not about any of that. Mark watney, the narrator is stranded on Mars. He has to survive to be rescued so he becomes a farmer, a repair man and uses his brain, wits and humor (dark as it sometimes is) to get by. I was on the edge of my seat for most of this and the last 20 pages made my heart beat fast and hold my breath. The science is not out of reach in this and

I've seen analogies to the movie "Castaway" and the book "Robinson Crusoe" - I agree with both. Mark Watney is stranded on Mars after a freak storm separates him from the rest of the Ares 3 mission crew. He adapts and overcomes (must have been a Marine in a former career) and is able to survive long enough for a rescue attempt to be formulated. Most of the story is told in a "diary form" of communication as Watney attempts to leave a record of his passing. The view from Earth chapters are especi

I didn't think I would love this book as much as I did. I'm not a space/scientific kind of girl. But the author didn't overwhelm with so much scientific information. I loved the humor, resilience, and tenacity of the main character, Mark Watney. I couldn't put it down during the last 75 pages - I had to know what happened at the end!

I like a good survival story and was interested in the premise of this story about a man, Mark Watney, who goes on a NASA mission to Mars and ends up being stranded there as the rest of his team believes he is dead and have to escape themselves before a storm overtakes them all. Most of the story is told in the form of mission logs written by Watney. His voice is very entertaining and definitely helped the story but I will admit my eyes started to glaze over a bit at some of the technical parts.

4.75. Was worried this would be too techy for me, but I LOVED it. MacGuyver on Mars -- what's not to love?
