I purchased the ebook at Amazon.com in order to fulfill a request by a Goodreads group for a review of this new book. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it, at least in its present form.

The motivation of the author is admirable. He wants to help couples deal with their communication problems using Scripture. The motivation of the author is admirable. He wants to help couples deal with their communication problems using Scripture. This derives from his personal experience as a young boy losing his mother to HIV and his stepfather to violence. Haitian, it seems, by descent, he has lived many years in the US. His own marriage is strong, due, he believes, to the extraordinarily difficult first years of the life as man and wife. I cannot say life together, because of their many months of separation as a newly married couple. He wasn't to strengthen family ties and marital communication.

Mathieu occasionally uses examples from his own life and marriage to good effect. He says he spent many years informally interviewing many couples on the nature of their relationship. I wish he had included more information from these conversations into his book. He could have used many more illustrations of his chapters. I like the author's principle (drawn from Jesus’ words in Mark 10:8 “The two shall become one flesh”); he could have used: “It’s not about you; it’s about you two” more often. Might even be a good title.

The book suffers from a lack of professional editing, excused by the author by a lack of budget. He fails to identify his target audience, to show any extensive reading by his nearly non-existent bibliography, or refer to other studies on marital communication and how his method is different or better. I would like to see Mathieu implement my suggestions (from a self-published author), and create another version under professional editing. I believe he will take these critiques to heart (and I will send him my detailed list), to try again. I wish him well in his efforts.
