After reading Lamb, I was happy to find that we had more Christopher Moore novels on our bookshelves at home. Out of the group I located, I chose Practical Demonkeeping to start off with.

Practical Demonkeeping is about a man who summoned a demon by accident who is near the end of his quest of finally sending the demon back to Hell after several decades. Everything comes to a climax with a series of twisted and interesting characters including a Djinn, a haggard bartender, a WWI vet, a store

Although it had some rough edges, I enjoyed it nonetheless. A tale of a young seminary student who accidentally brings forth a man-eating, wise-cracking, demon named Catch. Protected from death by virtue of having this scaly, huge monster (when he is in his eating form) as sidekick, Travis is forced to live a long life of steering the demon to human victims whose disappearance at least rids communities of drug pushers and pimps (although the occasional bum is also taken), as he tries to figure a ...more

Recommends it for: those who appreciate a delightfully twisted sense of humor.

While it's certainly no Dirty Job , I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Seeing as 2 of the 3 Moore books I'd previously read were his new ones, I wasn't sure if there was any truth to the talk that he wasn't much good 15 years ago. It's full of his special brand of laugh-out-loud humor that very few books can pull off, and if that's not enough, Rivera's in it. I know I've said it before, but I'm constantly ...more

While not as polished as his later books, Practical Demonkeeping is pure Moore in its zany plotline, delightfully weird characters and tongue-in-cheek narration. In particular, Lovecraft readers and horror-genre fans will find a lot to laugh about here.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book. Great action, dialogue, characters. All quite believable. And Catch the demon was quite funny for such an evil guy. Then wham bam slam. The book was done. I would have preferred a longer more dragged out ending!
