The Help + In Cold Blood + True Blood = Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. There might be a better southern black magic book to sub in for True Blood, but I can't think of it. Definitely a combination of The Help and In Cold Blood, I'm open to suggestions for which book can cover Minerva's role.

If you are also picking this up almost 30 years after it was published, I recommend NOT doing any googling of character names until you get to Part II. The top search hits divulge plot points that ...more

I found the book more travelogue than murder mystery. It was interesting to learn about Savannah's isolation and it's eccentric personalities, but I found the book overall pretty slow. The vivid writing couldn't make up for the slow and meandering plot. ...more

Set in beautiful Savannah, and with a very interested set of characters. My aunt gave this to me when I was 16 and I fell in love. - I know there's not much to the review, except for - read it! you won't be disappointed. ...more
