I really wanted to like this. I really did. But I can only take so much bombardment of pop culture references before I just start skimming over it to get to the real story (see also: why I can't stand The Big Bang Theory).

The narration was amateur (felt like a diary), the dialog was cliched (lots of smart-ass asides during moments of incredibly high stress), but the world-building was fantastic and by halfway through the book I had a hard time putting it down. I would call this a four+. Knocking off a few points for a few too-long passages about nerd stuff that were detailed beyond my interest. But truly, a fantastic, engaging book. People kept describing it as an ode to 80's pop culture, but the comparison that would have gotten me to crack it open a little sooner would have been " a less-bleak Ender's Game."

I don't remember the last book I had so much fun with! An amazing ride that I couldn't get off.

A dystopian future; teenaged protagonists; an evil, monopolistic corporation; lives lived almost entirely in a a virtual world; an 80's obsessed genius; referances to John Hughes, Duran Duran, and Schoolhouse Rock; a great read

Since I've seen none of the movies referenced in this book, the pop culture references weren't that interesting to me. Also the David/Goliath and "enjoy the world around you" underlying themes were very thinly veiled.

4.5... I know the boring gamer stuff was important but ugh. Otherwise, I'm glad I stuck with it and finished it. I loved the story. I loved the characters. Can't wait for the movie.
