Solid YA fiction. Dystopian future with society split into factions (shades of Hunger Games and even Harry Potter houses), with a heroine who doesn't quite fit into any one category and is thus Special. Many of the "twists" were a bit predictable (Four's big secrets, for example), but the final set piece was really done. I felt a little bit out of my element at first, as this is not a genre I typically care for. Divergent was recommended to me by another reader that I trust a great deal, so I gave it a go and I am truly glad I did. Great, well-drawn characters. Original and fast-paced plot. This would be a great book for a teen or adult book discussion- there is so much to talk about it. While there are certainly some flaws to the story, I think this book lives up to the hype surrounding it. Seriously fast paced, original and thought provoking. I think we will see quite a few great things come out of this author's pen over the years and I will be excited to read them. ...more

I don't understand how I get so sucked in. The writing was pretty bad (and I'm not one to usually criticize writing but when sentences are phrased weird and comments are said that conflict others its bad) but the story was fun and addicting. Back to the writing though, I loved her description of feelings. You know what Tris feels even if she doesn't which was great.
