Before I began "The Song of Achilles," I heard I'd be sobbing. I didn't sob, but it certainly has stuck, and I cannot get the ending off my conscience.
Madeline Miller is a classics scholar, which earns her credibility when handling The Iliad. Enjoyed this just as much as Circe - well, maybe a little bit less. I didn't find the character of Achilles permeable in this one, and then couldn't really believe in his actions towards the end. As with Circe, the ending and action felt a little hurried here, and for somebody who's writing about a lot of battles in ancient Greece, Miller doesn't write especially strong or clear battle scenes. That said, still totally compelling and enjoyable. Definitely recommend.
