Shelves: fiction, 5-stars

I love this book! The story is beautifully written. And with the chapters that described me at the circus, I felt like I was there experiencing all of the magic in those tents.

I do have to admit that I wasn't 100% on board at the beginning. It took me a little time to get into it, but once the story got going I couldn't put this book down.

If I could, I would run away an join The Night Circus in a second! For now, I'll have to settle for experiencing it in my imagination. It's a pretty great pl ...more

First, I recommend for your first reading you might really want to sick to the physical book. I used the audiobook, and there are a lot of time jumps and names that are hard to keep straight with the audiobook. The narration is really good and that made up for most of the struggles. I do recommend the audiobook but only as a reread, if possible.

This book has a great premise: two students raised in different schools of thought about magic face each other in a challenge they have to compete in. However the book falls way short of living up to this. First off the two “challengers” are forced into the challenge by their respective father and father-figure. I really wanted to enjoy this book, and was looking forward to the promises of the blurb. I gave up. There is very little plot and even less characterization. However, there is a lot of nonsensical description. The promises of the blurb are not delivered.

This book was not for me. I keep expecting to be told that they circus was a metaphor for the way society was being controlled and manipulated. This idea was reinforced by the presence of Mr. A H -- whom I thought was Adolph Hitler. Out there? Obviously. Perhaps that explains why I don't read much fantasy. ...more
