A Study in Charlotte?

I see what you did there.

Clever title aside, this Sherlock Holmes homage is an interesting and entertaining story that features the great-great-great-great grandchildren of the original Holmes and Watson. Being a young adult novel and requiring the requisite romantic angst, this time around it's Holmes' descendent Charlotte and Watson's descent, Jamie.

Brought together at a private school in Connecticut, the duo soon finds themselves at the center of a series of murders tha

This is closer to 3.5, but I'm not quite sure it hits 4 for me, I pushed it to 4 because I so enjoyed the surrounding characters.

I enjoyed this reincarnation of Holmes/Watson, but I don't feel like there are new or different things happening here. That said, I loved how all the characters are murky/shady/questionable. No one (save the ultimate killers) are purely good/evil, which is a great way to begin a series.

The audio was also good, but not so wonderful that "readers" should listen rather

An excellent change of pace from the YA fantasy I traditionally read, but with a similar feeling. Laugh out loud funny in some parts—the characters are unique and engaging and I enjoyed hearing the story from Jamie’s POV. The writing is quite lovely on top of everything, although I will say that parts of the mystery did not make total sense to me.

CW: I was not expecting how heavy many of the topics in this book are—rape and substance abuse, primarily. It took me by surprise, since they are disc

Charlotte Holmes and James Watson, descendants of the famous Sherlock and Watson are thrown together at school in America. They are on one heck of an adventure once they are framed for murder and try to clear their names. Fun detective story, a little overdone with the drugs and their age. Classic YA trope with missing parents and kids smarter than the adults.

I should start by saying I love all things Sherlock Holmes. This book was pretty good, there were some instances in which I struggled to follow the character motivations and the development of relationships, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the fact that it's the first of a series. I will definitely be checking out book #2! I'm hoping that Watson gets just a little less angst-y and full of self-doubt going forward, because it did start to get a bit tired by the end of the book. ...more
