This book was awesome, I loved the whole world-building of it with the courts, the faeries, the history. I gotta say that I also really liked the villain for this one because I could understand how her cruelty came from this really deep pain. I mean, I hated what she did, but I liked that it all made sense. I also loved so many of the characters, and the romance in this one was /hot/. Their relationship developed so much quicker than things happened in ToG so it caught me off guard but in a good ...more

EDITED January 2018: I just finished the second book in the series. All my misgivings about A Court of Thorns and Roses turned out to be set up for the second installment. Orson Scott Card had to write Ender's Game so he could write Speaker For The Dead which is one of my all time favorite books. I won't give it away, but will say A Court of Mist and Fury has been added to my favorites shelf.

Half the time Feyre is TSTL, and half the time she isn't. It felt like reading about two different girls. The first half of this book also drrraaaagggggeeeeeddddddddddddd. The second half was by far more interesting, with Feyre having to complete 3 tasks to prove her love, and just her dealing with more of the fae was way more interesting than her moping around Tamlin's manor for the first half. So Feyre goes to live in fairyland over The Wall as life-repayment for killing a fae wolf. Then she repeatedly acts like an idiot. Let me count just a handful of the ways:

So she requests paint and canvas to keep her entertained, weeks/months later after she has devoted her entire days to painting she gets pissed at Tamlin for giving her paint. Why? Because they distracted her from worrying about her family. Yes, Tamlin is to blame for your inability to think of your family.

After repeatedly being told it is unsafe for her to leave the manor grounds, she still wanders into the scary forest NBD...and of course bad things happen. After repeatedly being told to stay in the house during a fae ritual what does she do? Get noisy and go on out anyway!

While being all stealth, trying to sneak up, she leaves her horse "tied to a solitary sycamore crowning a knoll"...yes. Leaving your horse at the top of a visible and empty hill will hide it well.

Sometimes it feels like english isn't Maas' first language. She misuses words and describes things with unrelated terms, so you're just like "wtf??" A small sampling of examples (if there were like 3 things like these I could forgive them, but the whole book is riddled witht his crap):

"his voice was void of anything" I think you mean devoid

"I was about to head toward a hall I had noted was nearly covered in painting after painting" ...This is slightly conflicting...is the hall nearly covered in paintings or covered in painting after painting??

"My knees groaned as I pushed myself harder"...you are what, 20? Your knees are not groaning. They may be burning or straining, but they aren't groaning.

"I hurled myself into a stop" ...hurling and stopping are two contradictory maneuvers.

"'Keep still,' Tamlin ordered, wringing the rag. 'You'll bleed out faster.'" ...dear lord how does an editor not catch this stuff? She's going to bleed out faster by holding still?

There are also simple dumb continuity errors, like the villainess' hair goes from being red-gold to black, the fae world being "so much territory...spread across the entire northern part of our world" to being "crammed." ...more

This was an amazing read, the plot line wasn't something amazing at the beginning, it reminded me slightly of Wings by Aprilynne Pike through most of the books, but from the middle it gets quite fast paced as we are finally given a few revelations. I really enjoyed the interaction between Tamin and Faeyre.
