Clearly MY 6th grade self was demented! I really loved this book, as a mom, while I can see the politics and human condition at work here....it was heart-breaking! The 6th grader wasn't super excited by the book. He wanted to get engrossed when something exciting happened, but the exciting led to less-than-happy endings. Interesting discussion, so that is a plus...and I still enjoyed the trip down memory lane, even if it was to find out that I had some issues! LOL... I'm still wondering WHY I lo

A second read through and I can understand the appeal to an English teacher, or in my case a Political Science professor. Though a nasty novel, Golding has perfected the literature to convey, to a discerning reader a valuable and essential message: at our most basic, humanity is nasty. Golding applies to the Hobbesian philosophy of the benevolent dictator, and it shows in the novel.
