One of my favorite fantasy series, ever. Good hearted, just the right amount of tension in the books, and magic doesn't fix everything instantly. Just a really beautiful, imaginative series.

Much like the Andrew Lang fairy tale books, the Baum Oz series were books I wanted to read all of after seeing a set on a bookstore shelf. I'd read the first one from the library when little, but the ones that hooked me on the series were the two 1930s/40s hardcover books that my mother had kept from her childhood. This was interesting reading the book with having only seen the musical and movie before hand. Some things struck me like how dull and boring Aunt Em and Uncle Henry were as compared to how fun and exciting Oz was and yet how much Dorothy still wanted to get home? There wasn’t a whole lot of compassion built up in the reader to Dorothy’s reason for wanting to get back?... She and her companions had a whole lot going for them by the end of the book before she returns.
