Much like the Andrew Lang fairy tale books, the Baum Oz series were books I wanted to read all of after seeing a set on a bookstore shelf. I'd read the first one from the library when little, but the ones that hooked me on the series were the two 1930s/40s hardcover books that my mother had kept from her childhood. The introduction from L. Frank Baum written in 1900 warns that he is about to depart from the origins of dark fairy tales such as those told by Grimm for a more modern type of fairy tale known as a "wonder tale." This is only partially the case, though - The Wizard of Oz is a timeless children's classic that will surprise you with its death toll, but delight you with its imagery. My edition has black & white drawings from the original illustrator, and a red leatherette binding.

After watching the movie dozens of times over the last 85 years, I have finally read the book and learned much about the mysterious land of Oz.
Dorothy's experiences in Kansas before the cyclone do not happen in the book. You meet Dorothy,who lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em and her dog,Toto, and she is swept away by a cyclone. Bang! Next chapter. Council with the Munchkins.
In the next three chapters, she aquires her fellow travelers, but on the way to Oz, there are several new adventures. ...more
