The Wizard of Oz is one of a very few shared experiences that unite Americans as a culture, transcending barriers of age, locale, politics, religion, and so on. We all see it when we are young, and it leaves an indelible mark on our imaginations. We can hardly imagine not knowing it. It ranks among our earliest and most defining experiences of wonder and of fear, of fairy-tale joys and terrors, of the lure of the exotic and the comfort of home.
It was a nice relecture of this modern fairytale. Reading it again at an age quite far from childhood, I couldn't stop to compare it with "Alice in Wonderland". The "Wizard of Oz" has his charm, but it is not my favorite fairytale. I still like the classic ones, Andersen or Grimm brothers style of fairytales.

Finished this--it was fun, but doubt I'll real the others.
I found this whole series free for kindle and decided to try the first book. I never cared for the movie, but the book, so far is enjoyable, so I intend to finish it. I don't know if I'll read all the others or not though. I DO tend to enjoy series though! ...more

For a children's book, it's stood the test of time well. I still enjoy a reread.
