"Мы, дети страшных лет России."
A book as epic in scale and psychology as any written by the 19th century masters. The only reason why I'd give Doctor Z. four stars and not five, is because I can't fully sympathize with the main character. From what I understand, Pasternak heavily based his titular hero on himself, and knowing the author's own rather bohemian relationships with women, there are quite a few parallels.

I have been a fan of the movie starring Omar Sharif as Zhivago and Julie Christie as Lara since forever so it was really a matter of time to read the book. I liked the story and the writting style, but I found it a little boring in the begining and in the end, but when it gets into the main story, which for me is Lara's and Yuri's relationship it is absolutely amazing.

I'm about a third of the way through this book for January book club, and I'm having trouble getting fully engaged.
This novel has a curious detachment that translates to the reader as "I don't really care about these characters, and I don't really care if YOU care about them either." And so I'm not really caring about the characters. Success? It's waaaaay too third person and refer-to-everyone by epithets ("The Doctor)" or last names ("Antipov"). Stylistic or cultural, perhaps, but there ...more

I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. I was mesmerized by the movie when I was younger and thought that the book would have the same effect. I often found myself having a hard time keeping track of who was who and found the ending so unsatisfying. Not the great romance novel I expected. Even the history of the Bolshevik Revolution was hard to follow. Disappointed.
