I have a lot to say about this book so I’m splitting it off into two sections.

This book is worth reading. It’s well-written and a cut above the typical YA, very much living up to the hype. I really liked Starr and could relate to some aspects of her experiences. Her family was fun to read about and vividly realized. The Hate U Give is a well written and complex book, and Angie Thomas does a really good job of breaking down the Black Lives Matter Movement for young people and adults alike. The relationships in the novel are complex and well fleshed out, and they help to elevate the discourse of the book as Angie Thomas is able to introduce multiple perspectives in the Black community concerning police brutality. I really enjoyed the perspective of this story and would say a solid 4.5 rating. I don't want to share my personal thoughts on the prejudice depicted in this story, but I appreciate the story being presented from a young African American teenage girl who teeters between two different worlds, like many people do and how she feels and what she sees.
