Barbara Kingsolver is the antidote to J.D. Vance. My Social Justice book club was going to read Hillbilly Elegy when it was a new book getting lots of attention. I had recently read it and found Vance's distain of the people he came from, "Hillbillies", to be very insulting. My sister lived in far southwestern Virginia for a couple of years in the late 1970's. This was a great book!! I fell in love with Demon almost immediately and couldn’t wait to read his story. It was a little difficult to get used to the writing style as it was as if Demon talking directly to you as the story unfolds. The punctuation and sentence structure is written just as if he were talking rather than adhering to standard sentence structure. But once you get into the story that slight confusion disappears.
