Barbara Kingsolver is the antidote to J.D. Vance. My Social Justice book club was going to read Hillbilly Elegy when it was a new book getting lots of attention. I had recently read it and found Vance's distain of the people he came from, "Hillbillies", to be very insulting. 2024 Popsugar #2. A Bildungsroman
I loved this book even when at times I was hating the characters, angry at the choices they were making and sick to my stomach waiting for the next obstacle to appear. I fell in love with these characters, which the author truly brings to life on the page. I don't even know how to put into words all the emotions and things I felt while reading it. Demon grabbed me by the heartstrings from the get-go and I was happily being carted along for the ride.

Oh, my goodness, it's good.
I haven't read David Copperfield, but I have some knowledge about it, and I think Barbara managed to transfer the spirit of the story to modern South. More than once I was asking "how does she know?" She can't possibly have lived through the things she talks about in this book, Demon's voice felt authentic and real, and it was heartbreaking, but in a good way. And the ending was good. It started to drag there a bit, but not for too long, like the damned The Goldfinch. ...more
