I did enjoy this but I'll be honest I do not understand all of the 4+ ratings. While I’m not an avid gamer, I’ve played enough to recognize a lot of the games (and what’s up with not giving Stardew credit till the Author's Notes?) and found the creation of the games interesting. I also liked the complexity of the characters. Marx was my favorite character, followed by Sam. Sadie, while I liked her in the beginning, she never seemed to grow up or become wiser. I am so glad this was my day off because I ended up listening to this in one day. I could not stop listening and didn't want to leave the lives of Sam, Sadie, and Marx. The story takes place over 30 years and follows their lives from when Sam and Sadie first meet in a children's hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The story ends up taking place in Massachusetts, Los Angelos, and Venice Beach and covers a wide range of topics, especially game development, but also human relationships, literatur ...more

I loved everything about this book, which seems ironic because for a good portion of the book, I disliked a couple of the characters.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow follows Sam Masur and Sadie Green through various stages of their life and later follows another friend Marx Wantabe as a third friend within their group during their college years. Sam and Marx are attending Harvad when Sam runs into Sadie, a friend from his youth, who happens to be attending MIT. Sam and Sadie had a falling out I loved everything about this book, which seems ironic because for a good portion of the book, I disliked a couple of the characters.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow follows Sam Masur and Sadie Green through various stages of their life and later follows another friend Marx Wantabe as a third friend within their group during their college years. Sam and Marx are attending Harvad when Sam runs into Sadie, a friend from his youth, who happens to be attending MIT. Sam and Sadie had a falling out when they were younger, but they reconnect and begin, with Marx's financial backing in many ways, to program and develop a video game; although, a large portion of the work is really Sadie's.
Alas, as is typical of a male-dominated industry, Sam gets more credt for the game than Sadie does, which becomes a source of friction between the two as decisions are made about the publishing, the launch, and the publicity of the game.

When I first heard about the book and considered reading it, I was worried that it would focus too much on gaming, and while the gaming industry is central to the plot of the novel, since Sam and Sadie do develop their friendship at first around hours of playing Mario and then go on to develop and produce a wildly popular game, it's not really the gaming so much as the relationships between Sam and Sadie, Sam and Marx, Sadie and Marx and a couple of additional characters that are the driving force of the novel.

One of the things that I most appreciated about the parts where the focus was primarily on gaming was detail awarded to the creative process of developing a game (along with some other creative endeavors). I also really enjoyed the insights into Sam's and Sadie's emotional and mental health during their time together during their childhood and how that impacted both their overall relationship but their emotional growth and mental health as young college students and as adults. Additionally, I think that the book does a really good job of tackling some complex issues related to classism, economic status, racism, sexism, mental health, homophobia, and priviledge.

Everything about this book honestly makes it well worth the read, but I don't know what more to say about the book without giving too much of the circumstances of Sam, Sadie, and Marx's relationships (and, thus, the plot) away. ...more

Shelves: new-favourites

This is my favourite book that I've read this year. It was clever, with many themes woven together and different styles of storytelling. And it was also very moving. I cried through several of the later chapters. I felt the bonds between the characters. I related to the characters, despite not being a huge gamer. I loved the nostalgic 90s setting. And I want to play all of the games that Sam and Sadie created! ...more

Moms Book club pick. I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. It had a lot going on it. The common discussion across the various characters and years was video gaming. This book had a little bit of everything - murder, death of a loved one, crazy boy friend, major fights between friends, huge misunderstandings, and strange love triangles. I can’t say I liked this book but I can’t say I didn’t like it.

Oh the writing is fabulous and the story is so well told.
On the surface, it’s a book about gamers and game designers….Beneath the surface you find love, heartache, friendship, creativity and so much more!
