The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. The picture that author Chbosky paints of the protagonist gives little to the imagination that he would be often overlooked. Luckily older friends embrace him and convince him to step out of his shell and live in the moment. As the story progresses, readers begin to get to know the flawed yet fabulous Charlie and root for him to finally let people in and live life. Well-written, poignant and thought-provoking, but this book just wasn't quite for me. I was (definitely as a teenager) and probably still am a wallflower, so I expected to relate to the main character, gender differences aside. I was not expecting so much gloom and doom and not-quite-but-almost-unrelenting sadness. I'm very fortunate to not be one of those people who had a great deal of angst in their childhood and teenage years, so I can't really relate to those who had such traumatic experienc ...more
