I very much enjoyed this book. The fictionalized version of what happened to this family was heartbreaking. I found the protagonist to be such a relatable character. She was not without flaws, but she loved her family fiercely and did the best she could in the face of adversity. Avery, another one of the book's main characters, was slightly two dimensional. I liked the IDEA of Avery, but thought she probably could have been written with more depth. I would definitely read another book by Lisa Wi ...more

I've always been a fan of historical fiction. This story did not disappoint. The characters were easily identifiable although I never grew up in Mississippi on a river or was adopted The love of sisters and family tugged at my heartstrings throughout. ...more

This was a mixed bag for me. I read this after having read some really good historical and contemporary fiction and this just seemed average in comparison. I liked it but it wasn’t special to me. I didn’t feel emotionally connected and I found Avery somewhat annoying. I wish the synopsis hadn’t revealed so much because the chapters of the past lacked suspense. What I liked was how the story kept moving at a fast pace.

Touched deepky

I haven't had a book hit my heart this hard in a long time. May, Avery and everyone came alive for me every minute. I found myself holding my breath waiting for the next moment to come.

The suspense in the book kept me turning pages, but the overall story was too plot-driven for me and I would have enjoyed better character development.

I didn’t care for the format, which broke up every other chapter going between past and present. Towards the end, the “surprise revelation” was dragged out and I was disappointed by the outcome.

I did like reading the story of the Foss kids, even though at times it was difficult. It is disheartening to realize that this fictional story was close

This has been on my reading list for a while and it did not disappoint. I will say I wanted more and wished for more in certain part with certain characters but over all it was a very good book. Very touching story.
