I very much enjoyed this book. The fictionalized version of what happened to this family was heartbreaking. I found the protagonist to be such a relatable character. She was not without flaws, but she loved her family fiercely and did the best she could in the face of adversity. Avery, another one of the book's main characters, was slightly two dimensional. The suspense in the book kept me turning pages, but the overall story was too plot-driven for me and I would have enjoyed better character development.
I didn’t care for the format, which broke up every other chapter going between past and present. Towards the end, the “surprise revelation” was dragged out and I was disappointed by the outcome.
