This was a really fast-paced read for me, and I loved that it was based on true events. I thought Wingate captured the horror and desperation, and the book definitely made an emotional impact on me. I did feel a little emotionally manipulated throughout the book, but given the subject, I think it might've felt watered down if some of the events hadn't happened.

I could have done without Avery's whole storyline, and I thought the romance plot was totally unnecessary and distracting. I also thought

Lisa Wingate's historic-fic explored the Georgia Tann adoption scandal. Children living in poverty were forcible removed from their parents' care by telling mothers their baby died during childbirth or at times, outright kidnapping.

Before We Were Yours chronicles the Ross children's abduction and being sent to the Children' House before being adopted out from their siblings. While Rill (May) remains steadfast in reuniting her family, modern-day events bring the past to the present.

A haunting, breathtaking, stunning story. I was telling everyone I crossed paths with about this book while I was reading it. The story (that happened in real life - at least the bones of it) was almost beyond my belief and nearly broke my heart. I was drawn into the story of the children and adults. I was brought near tears multiple times. I can't wait to pick up another book by Lisa Wingate. ...more

Liked it, didn’t love it. The children’s story could have been so much better and further developed and I definitely wanted more. Didn’t care for Avery as a character....why did this need to be about her. It didn’t. Disappointing.

Really enjoyed this book. I love a good page turner. The fact that this type of thing really occurred is just horrifying.
