Ugh.
I liked this book, I really did....
It started out wonderfully, telling the story from the point of view of Melanie, a 10 year old, brilliantly written little girl. The first several chapters are awesome. I felt the promise of a wonderful book to come and it wasn't BAD but...
The slog begins. Almost immediately.
Thing is, I like books that describe the territory. I like some action but what I wanted more of was the first part of the book. It was so slow going and I was so irritated that I sto ...more

I read this in spite of knowing it was a "zombie apocalypse" theme because of the good reviews I read on it. The writing is excellent and the story line held my interest, but I was put off by the goriness. If you like zombie books, read it; otherwise I'd pass on it. 2/5 stars.

Melanie (the main character) is a child, but one who is precocious and yet naïve enough ...more

Whoa. Flowers for Algernon meets The Walking Dead. The beginning made me so uncomfortable in the way only a fantastic author can. Character-driven writing. And such interesting characters. The doctor was my favorite. Not in a warm-fuzzy way. But her thought process was just complex and egotistical and humanitarian and inhumane.
Just when I thought I didn't need another zombie book . . .
This was fantastic. Never quite went where I thought it would. Ending, supreme!
So satisfying, and gripping from the first page. Now I have to go hide it from my 9-year old, who thinks she can read it. Not so much. ...more
