Although the first 100 pages or so were a bit underwhelming, the next 230 pages were everything I hoped the book would turn out to be. As the story opens, a lovely home in the planned, well-to-do community of Shaker Heights, Ohio, is going up in flames while the owner, Elena Richardson, stands across the street in her bathrobe watching, I assume pondering what the hell happened in her almost perfect life to have this occur. It's been a long time since I read this novel. I read it for a book group that several English teachers at my school put together. Another teacher and I, both of us retired, joined them for the book club. It's been wonderful, includes a history teacher and a science teacher who is also a strong feminist. She spent a year reading only women writers.
