I want to give this book 5 stars and two thumbs up. Lisa See knows how to capture the relationships between women ( mother to daughters, grandmother to grand daughter, sister to sister) and you can easily relate to the dynamics of family relationships. Lisa See did a great Job teaching readers about China in the early 20th century, I learned a lot more from her books than I did in school. Another great book by Lisa See about Chinese people and their culture. I put her right up there with Pearl Buck and Bette Bao Lord. I haven't read Shanghai Girls but I need to now although this book totally stands on it's own. The great Famine and "The Great Leap Forward" wasn't discussed much while I was in school during this time and I never really read anything about it until recently.
