I agree with the reviews that point out that this book is not subtle. In many ways, it is anything but subtle.
However, sometimes life isn't so subtle, either.
Unlike some others, I found the characters and the narrative plausible and compelling. Unlike other . . . others . . . I didn't think it was altogether brilliant. This book is amazing!When I started it, I thought it would be very predictable, but the plot was fresh and enjoyable, with authentic characters who I wish I could be friends with in real life. ¡Enhorabuena, Cristina Henríquez!
I was angry at this book's ending all afternoon. If I get past this I may give it one more star.
I loved to read about the adults' stories in this book and how different they all were but how all these stories ended up with the same goal, coming to the US to make a better life for themselves.
This book would be better categorized as Young Adult since it mainly tells the stories of Maribel and Mayor, teenagers. I really wanted to know more about the adults', and was disappointed that most of thei ...more

Wow. Cried so much. Felt so depressed reading this. Very sad.
The Latino version of Americanah for young adults. Very good read.
