I had mixed feelings as I was thinking about this review. Had it not been a book club selection I might not have finished it. There are two main reasons why I read a book: one is to learn something and the other is for enjoyment. For most of the book I was not entertained and it was only on reflection that I learned a few things. Although I did not care for the story itself, I realized that my reason for not liking the story was because of the main character's messed up life. When I realized tha I had mixed feelings as I was thinking about this review. Had it not been a book club selection I might not have finished it. There are two main reasons why I read a book: one is to learn something and the other is for enjoyment. For most of the book I was not entertained and it was only on reflection that I learned a few things. Although I did not care for the story itself, I realized that my reason for not liking the story was because of the main character's messed up life. When I realized that was indeed what some actually go through I began to sympathize, and hence learned something, even if against my will. You know, it was sort of like my dear mother forcing me to learn to read when I would have rather been playing outside. Looking back I am glad she was so mean to me. (I love you Mom!)

As for rating this, the stars came and went a couple at a time. Subtract two for the plot; add two for the author's mastery of the written word. The main character's mother told her that they were better than everybody else, even though they appeared to be poor. She talked of eating duck's eggs with fancy trimmings as a treat when the riffraff gorged themselves on the likes of Happy Meals. She used more ten dollar words than I cared to look up. The author spoke through the character's mind in such a way that I felt she was a real person at times. And the way she interacted with others reminded me of those autistic individuals who get themselves in trouble because they say things out loud with a child's innocence until they learn better through a life of hard knocks. And I should add here that the main character's one and only friend was not perfect, yet she tolerated his faults. Looking past them, she saw the good in him. It was great!

I am not going to give any spoilers here because some of my friends out there may want to read the book someday. I will say that I was very disappointed in how the issues with Mommy Dear were resolved. When you read it you may shed a tear or smile with joy, but I just started at the page and said out loud, "Well, that sucks!" ...more

I wish the end was a bit meatier, nonetheless, I had fun reading it.
I am so glad to be picking up great books at the beginning of the year itself.

This is an adorable book, it was a delight for me to read every single page. The story takes place in Wales, UK, where Eleanor Oliphant lives. She has been working at the same company for almost ten years. She does not need anything in life, she already has a pleasant routine, every weekend she goes to Tesco to buy her dinner to enjoy it in her apartment. She doesn't any friends but she is happy with her books and activities at home. However, she meets Raymond, a friendly IT guy from her office. ...more

Eleanor Oliphant is a diverse character as she is insightful yet impassive. She lives a heartbreaking story, yet we see her try to push through. Eleonor's insights are straight to the bone and makes readers realize that we take the greatest things for granted; ie. having a family that loves and supports us, having friends, having a home, and basically the security that we have amongst ourselves and our families.
