I kept wanting to love this book more than I did. I think the 'narrator voice' syndrome may have struck again, unfortunately.

The language was... pretty ... in a way, but I kept finding it too serious for the book. Or like it was TRYING to be very serious. Overly melodromatic. For instance, Hazel says she 'lived' in the witch's eyes for a moment (instead of just saying she met the witch's gaze), and I rolled mine. It very much could have been that the narrator was trying to give all of the lines

Beautiful writing, meaningful, thought provoking, and entertaining all in one. A young adult (8 to 12) book deserving of all the awards it won.
