I enjoyed this book, the turmoil and issues around the protagonist, etc. - good story overall and well written. A few things fell flat now and then: the end felt too pat, the transformation into a man felt a little silly or insincere (i.e. the overall appearance, the immediacy w/out apparently any transitional physical/fashion issues, something seemed to be lacking in the general depiction of gender transition, etc).

The writing is all over the place and the story extremely superficial. No matter how hard I tried I could not find any insightful passages or hidden metaphors. Yes, the main character is a hermaphrodite. So? It's not like his/her identity is present as a continuing red thread in the whole "epic family saga" so I wouldn't be that shocked about it. Very very hollow and the ending was flat (I'm surprised I decided to go that far). Well, maybe that was a logical continuance after a flat family story

Eugenides tells a brilliant tale and weaves family history with a antagonist I learned a lot from. Several sentences were so brilliantly written I read them over, and over, and over.
Excellent writing, vivid and creative character development, and intriguing plotline.
This took me a while to get into, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Great read.
