This is a well-written, easy-to-read account of an NPR correspondent's road trip during his final days in China after being stationed there for several years. I found it absorbing and informative and feel like I now have a good idea of what modern-day China is like in all its ambiguities and paradoxes.

There is a lot of history from all different periods in China's history as well as an interesting account of the authors time and travels spent in China and his knowledgeable opinion on where China stands in today's world.
