This book is fantastic and a must read for all. It's a story about a girl, Francie, growing up in Brooklyn with her alcoholic father, hard-working and pragmatic mother, and her younger brother, whom Francie is well aware that her mother loves more than her. The story is based on the author's experiences of growing up in Brooklyn, but "not as things were, but how they should have been". ...more

Timeless coming of age book, one that I missed in my youth. Gives a good portait of the Irish in Brooklyn at that time.
