According to the author, this story is based on "Maid Maleen," a tale from the brothers Grimm, but set in an invented landscape that resembles Mongolia. Reminded me a bit of Rapunzel, except not exactly. Fun. :)

This is definitely my favorite Shannon Hale novel yet. I especially enjoyed the Mongolia-inspired setting.
