According to the author, this story is based on "Maid Maleen," a tale from the brothers Grimm, but set in an invented landscape that resembles Mongolia. Reminded me a bit of Rapunzel, except not exactly. Fun. :) ...more

Dish: A yummy re-telling of 'Maid Maleen', a Brothers Grimm tale I've never heard of before. Ingredients: (1) a multiple-year imprisonment in a castle tower; (2) a heroine who is not at all pretty; (3) the assumption of an alternative identity; (4) the bitter winds and austere beauty of the Mongolian steppes.

I was so riveted I actually finished this book in one sitting, and on a work-night too...

This is definitely my favorite Shannon Hale novel yet. I especially enjoyed the Mongolia-inspired setting.
