I work for Peace Corps and help train Volunteers and help them throughout their service, such as when they struggle in their relationships with counterparts. The author of this book was a Peace Corps volunteer who met Monique, the local midwife when she arrived in Mali. The conditions in which they worked, the people of the village and the relationships formed there are a major part of the book. Together they improved the lot of birthing women, and even though the ending is sad, Kris and her husband have ongoing ties with their Mali family.
