Sigh. I'm giving this three stars because it's the last, but it's not very good. When a story is preposterous, it needs to be something else as well: funny or exciting or with something interesting to say about characters or situations, but this failed on all accounts. In addition, the plotting was laborious. Still, ave atque vale, Mrs. P; but I'd recommend reading only the Cold War novels. She aged badly (yeah, I know, she didn't age at all). ...more

The last of the Polifax books! As usual, the loveable senior citizen, Mrs. Emily Polifax, is able to use her common sense and complete her task for the CIA. While on her escapades, she treats us to a detailed description of Syria so that you feel you are there yourself. Always enjoyable.

The last book in the Mrs. Pollifax series. This time Mrs. Pollifax and Farrell are sent to Syria to see if they can find out if a young American woman is still alive. Amanda Pym ended a hijacking of a plane and then is kidnapped from the airport in Damascus. Mrs. P and Farell's search soon leads them into the Syrian desert. Re-reading this reminded me how much fun this series is. I might just need to re-read them all now. ...more
