A local friend recommended Small Island, and I began the book without even reading the summary. The story jumps between 1948 and the years prior to and during World War II. While the 1948 parts of the story take place in London, the before bits span from the UK to Jamaica and India and the States as the stories of Queenie, Hortense, Gilbert, and Bernard weave together. The book deals primarily with racial relations leading up to and after WWII as the diversity of London began to increase. While ...more
