I remember the purple covered book in my grandparent's basement, complete with Sherlock Holmes' cap and pipe. Re-reading this many years later, I realize this book is everything a young kid from Utah and Sherlock Holmes fan could ask for -- Holmes, Watson, deductive reasoning, Mormons, Brigham Young, Danites (old Mormon band of religious vigilantes), Utah, 221B Baker Street -- I could go on, but it was a marvelous and historic jaunt back through the past.

I really enjoyed my first Sherlock Holmes book. My only disappointment was that Holmes disappears for at least half the book, while Doyle gives the backstory of the motives behind the murders. Even so, Holmes is delightful every time he appears on the page, and the overall story is pretty good, too.
I'll definitely be reading more of Holmes and would recommend this one to any Holmes fan, since this book is where it all began.
N.B. The book is excellent on audio. ...more
