I hear about these books ALL THE TIME - I might as well find out what the fuss is about.

My kids and I listened to the audiobook on a series of road trips. The audiobook is well done, with a full cast, but it never really held our attention. The story just felt kind of dull. And I guess it didn't help that we didn't listen all in one go. ...more

I wish I hadn't seen the movie before I read this book.
Still, the book was far better than the movie. In fact, the book actually made sense.
One note of criticism though, I didn't care for Pullman's religious reaching, it seemed to grand for the novel and somewhat heavy-handed. As pure fantasy, it was a lot of fun. However, I don't think that the story of Lyra Silvertongue is as compelling as Harry Potter. But of course I'm hooked--I've got to finish all three! ...more

I hadn’t read this since I was 15, and I really enjoyed it again! I never finished the series so plan to do that now. A much darker feel than a typical fantasy, but I guess that’s why it’s called his “dark materials.” I am not the hugest fan of Lyra, but the world building is pretty masterful. Yay for bears that can talk and pets that stay with you forever.

There are some cliches in here, to be sure, but this is a fantastic book. Pullman's writing is beautiful; his world-building detailed and interesting, and the plot exciting. Most of all, the characters are well-drawn---you come to care about them as you read. Very excited for the next book.

I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I had no trouble putting it down right at the climax of the story. It just didn't hold my interest at all.
