(First of all, let me make one thing very, very clear….This is not that Shades of Gray. I can’t imagine a situation in which I would force myself to spend even an hour reading that book. Not my cuppa tea. Not even close. Wish so much that this wonderful book had a title that didn’t confuse people about its story. Sigh. Oh well.)

A very sobering story about the horrors of war steeped on the innocents by tyrannical humans such as Stalin and Hitler. Not often enough are the happenings of war told about the civilians who suffer rather than the soldiers and the military actions. The author does a fine job telling a long overdue tale of the Soviet deportations and genocide involved in World War II.
