It feels almost wrong to say I love this book because despite all but one of the characters in this book being fictional they are based on real people who went through real terrible atrocities at the hands of Stalin and the NKDV because of the Baltic Genocide during WWII. A very sobering story about the horrors of war steeped on the innocents by tyrannical humans such as Stalin and Hitler. Not often enough are the happenings of war told about the civilians who suffer rather than the soldiers and the military actions. The author does a fine job telling a long overdue tale of the Soviet deportations and genocide involved in World War II.
Intense and sad, but beautifully written. This should be on middle school/high school reading lists.
