I liked this book. I thought the writing was sweeping and vibrant. "Dolce" in particular was sad and moving for me. It was also interesting to view WWII through the eyes of the women left behind. However, when I read the appendixes, I was appalled.

This was fascinating...The backstory to how this was published is remarkable, of course, and I really liked the appendices that include her writing notebook entries as well as her correspondence. The correspondence in particular demonstrates how uncertain parts of the occupation were -- despite her being Russian and Jewish in lineage, her husband seemed somewhat confident that his connections could help to bring her back, and it seemed there was some belief that being arrested meant going to the

How I fish she had been able to finish all four (or five) parts of the book! Admittedly I liked the first part much better, as it dealt with many interesting characters, some of which I would have loved to get to know better. The second book was at its best when it described the interactions between French and Germans and created a vivid image of the occupation, but the central love story draaagged on and was, ultimately, fairly banal.
