This was not an easy read for me. It covers so much ground, and is filled with many new ideas and situations, that i had to reread a lot, and go back and make connections that maybe i should have seen easily. But I learned a lot - taking the time to read articles about the book and interviews with the author - but at times it felt as if I was working on a project for school. I look forward to discussing it.

This is not a perfect book, but it is an amazing book. It brings to life important and less-explored narratives of slavery such as the Maroon communities in Jamaica and the establishment of Liberia. It weaves a magical realism through this historical backdrop which could have become cartoonish, but remained powerful and essential.
